A doulas role is never meant to replace the support role of the partner. Instead a doula works with a couple to provide assurance, encouragement and support for both when they need it most.
Having a doula present allows a father to support his partner emotionally during labor and birth and to also enjoy this special moment himself, without the pressure of trying to remember everything they learned in childbirth class!
The partner's presence and loving support in birth is comforting and reassuring whether in a hospital or having a homebirth . The love they share with the mother and child, and the need to nurture and protect their family are priceless gifts that only they can provide. With a partner and a doula present at birth, a mother can have the best of both worlds -- her partner's loving care and attention and the doula's expertise and guidence in birth; whether in a hospital or having a homebirth.
