Speak tenderly to them. Let there be kindness in your face, in your eyes, in your smile, in the warmth of our greeting. Always have a cheerful smile. Don't only give your care, but give your heart as well.
Mother Teresa
Usually, my doula and client relationship begins several months before the baby is due. During this time, we establish a relationship that gives the mother freedom to ask questions, express fears and concerns, and take an active role in creating her birth preferences. I am available to the mother by appointment and by phone to answer questions or to explain any developments that may arise in pregnancy. Doulas are not doctors, nurses or in any way medical practitioners, and therefore do not provide any type of medical care. However, I am knowledgeable in the medical aspect of labor and delivery so I help my clients to better understand procedures and complications that may arise in late pregnancy or during delivery.
During delivery, I am with the mother at all times. I provide comfort with pain relief coping techniques such as breathing, relaxing, massage and different laboring positions. I offer reassurance and act as an advocate for the mother, encouraging her to fulfill her desired birth preference. I help the mother to have a positive and safe birth experience, whether she wants an un-medicated birth or is having a planned cesarean birth.
Visualize your ideal birth and make it your reality! After the birth, I usually spend a short time helping mothers begin the breastfeeding process and encourage bonding between the new baby and family members. I also meet with the parents and newborn baby for a postpartum visit about a week or two after the baby is born. Here, I can answer any remaining questions that the couple may still have.
I am here to help each family achieve their hearts desire....homebirth, waterbirth, hospital birth...it is your experience!
