Home Birth Experience

"People never sing...except in the bathroom. Birthing women also make their natural sounds next to running bath water. There is something about the power of water. People are drawn to water, spas, and sacred streams. Women in labor are drawn to water, too." Michel Odent, MD
Home births can empower women to create a birth experience that is intimate, personalized, and family-centered. Many women choose home births because delivering their baby in a familiar setting is important to them. Mothers have evaluated this experience as less stressful and very natural. Only in recent history has the idea of a home birth been considered an alternative practice. Before the turn of the century giving birth at home was the common custom. Some clear benefits to a home birth are; the parents are in a comfortable setting, the mother eats and drinks when needed, no unnecessary medical intervention, the women can labor in any position, and the baby is born in an environment with less harmful germs.

Options for Home Births

Home births can be attended or unattended. If a woman is attended she will have the assistance of a professional, who is usually a midwife. Women who are unattended will only have a spouse, family, friend, or non-
professional present, also known as a free-birth.
